Pokémon GO Field Research and Breakthrough Awards

A great feature (implemented since April 2018) is Field Research and the resulting rewards.  Each time you spin a Pokéstop, you get a new research task. If you complete a research task, you get a stamp (limited to one a day).  Once you collect 7 stamps, you are rewarded with a special Pokémon encounter – the breakthrough award.

Field Research Rules

  • Gyms don’t give Field Research tasks, only Pokéstops do.
  • You get only one stamp a day, no matter how many field research you complete.
  • You can delay picking up a reward to get the next day stamp after midnight.
  • If you complete a field research from a given Pokéstop, you’ll have to wait till the next day to do another one from the same stop.
  • If you delete the research task before completing, you can always go back and get the same task again.
  • There is a maximum of 3 simultaneous tasks at any given time.

Field Research Tasks and Awards

Tasks can be any aspect of Pokémon GO, such as hatching eggs, spinning a number of Pokéstops, battling in a gym,…

Task rewards can be items (Pokéballs, stardust, …) but also an encounter with a special Pokémon.  Pokémon from encounters have a higher probability to have better IV (individual values, minimal IV is 10/10/10 like egg hatches) and are always level 15.  Interesting to know is they cannot flee. Some  Pokémon (such as Spinda) can only be caught as research award and are not available in the wild.

Field Research encounters are not boosted by weather but they can be shiny.

Research tasks and awards change on the first day of every month, at 01:00 PM PDT (this converts to 04:00 AM Singapore time on the second day of the month).

Research tasks and awards are influenced by events, while breakthrough awards are not.
